In thinking about how much power Zinnia and Cleome acquire in this section of the reading and as well as the focus on slavery and escape, I tried to remember whether or not Laird Hunt explicitly stated the races of the characters in the novel. Based on American history, I assume that Linus’ slaves are black, but I wonder how the novel would function if they are white. Are Linus and Ginny black? If Hunt has made this clear then my questions have been answered, but if not it will be interesting to see how the related themes (escape, identity, displacement, etc.) will further develop.
